the disposable camera project

the disposable camera project

hey friends,

so earlier this year while search thrift stores for “Found in Kitsap” cameras I came across 3 disposable cameras which were “brand new.” that is, they were wrapped in plastic and had all their exposures left. there was one camera with 24 frames, and 2 with 12 each. I had almost* no idea how old the film was, or if it was still any good. after all, someone may have kept these cameras on a “hot car dash” and baked the celluloid to smithereens. OR they could have been kept in a nice dark drawer and be perfectly ok. until the film was shot and developed it would be a mystery…

*one of the cameras had a “Superman Returns” theme which would put it around 2005/6

obviously I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to experiment with these…and since it would only cost something like $5 for all three – I bought them.

now for the last few years I’ve mostly been taking pictures on my iPhone. I like the simplicity of options and the fact that I pretty much “always have it with me,” but as the 3 year old phone started to wear out, the camera became less and less reliable. in fact, it was mostly inoperable most of the time.

so I decided to use these disposable cameras to take my pictures this summer. it was a bit of a gamble. the photos might turn out amazing…or I might not get any. plus I had only FORTY EIGHT frames to last me multiple trips around the West Coast…and to my good friend’s wedding on Maui. I’d have to make each shot count.

when I removed the first camera from the plastic wrap, I learned a bit more about its age. there was a “contest” you could enter and the “rules” dated it to circa 1997/8.

it’s pretty small, but take a look at the 2nd-to-last line of “bold” text.

there is really something amazing about celluloid. these photos taken with the cheapest possible cameras are testament to that…

so when’s the last time you shot on film?

p.s. if you click on the photos there’s a little description of each on the flickr page, but for here I wanted to keep it as simple as possible.
